What is Egg Freezing?

As a woman ages, her fertility reduces. This is mainly because the number of high-quality eggs reduces. Apart from age, there are multiple factors that can also affect fertility. Thankfully, today, it is possible to preserve eggs for later use. This is known as oocyte freezing which refers to a process wherein eggs are harvested from a woman’s ovaries, and frozen unfertilized for later use. When the woman decides that she wants to have a baby, she can utilize the eggs for an IVF cycle.

STEP 2

Blood Tests

After briefing you about the egg freezing procedure, your fertility specialist may order certain blood tests such as Anti-Müllerian Hormone(AMH), follicle-stimulating Hormone(FSH), estradiol, and thyrios stimulating Hormone(TSH).

Registration
STEP 3

Ultra Sound

Pelvic ultrasound or a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended by your fertility specialist to observ your reproductive organs and create a suitable treatment plan to preserv your fertility.

Registration
STEP 4

Ovulation Induction

Synthetic hormones are introduced to the woman's body at the start of her menstrual cycle to stimulate her ovaries. The aim is to ensure that her ovaries produce multiple eggs instead of the single egg that she usually produces every month. The follicles get ready for egg retrival after about 8 to 14 days. At this point, hcG hormones or other medications are injected to help mature the eggs.

Registration
STEP 5

Egg Retrieval

Egg retrival is a short procedure carried out under sedation. The common method adopted for the purpose is transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. In this approach, an ultrasount probe is introduced in the vagina for follicle identification. Then a needle is passed through the vagina to reach the follicle. Using a suction device that is attached to the needle, multiple eggs are removed from the follicle.

STEP 6

Egg Freezing & Long Term Storage

Once the unfertilized eggs are retrived, they are cooled to a sub-zero temprature so that all their biological activites can be rendered motionless and they can be preserved for future use. To prevent ice crystal formation during freezing process, substances called cryoprotectants may be used. Proper freezing of eggs is important because if not preserved correctly, it can impact the chances of a successful pregnancy.
